The big difference in who needs it
Smart Serve is per person: if you serve alcohol, you need your own certificate. The food handler rule is per premises: the operator must make sure at least one trained food handler or supervisor is on site every hour the place is open. Many employers still ask all kitchen staff to get one.
Do you need both?
- Server or bartender: Smart Serve, yes. Food handler, if your employer needs you to cover the on-site requirement or asks for it.
- Cook or kitchen staff: food handler is the relevant one. Smart Serve only if you also serve or sell alcohol.
- Manager: often both: you may be the certified food handler on shift and you’re involved in alcohol service.
One doesn’t replace the other. To find food handler training, contact your local public health unit or check the ministry’s list of recognized providers on ontario.ca.
