The best ways to study for Smart Serve
Ranked, best first
- 1
1. The official Smart Serve course
Required, and the source of the test. About four hours online ($44.95), or in class with an approved facilitator. Do every activity and quiz instead of clicking through.
- 2
2. Explained practice questions
Our 33-question practice test uses the real test’s length and pass mark, and every answer explains the rule. Free, no sign-up.
- 3
3. Topic drills for weak spots
Most people lose marks on ID, intoxication or the law. Drill the one you miss most.
- 4
4. The AGCO’s own guidance
The AGCO publishes plain-language tips for identifying minors, checking ID, recognizing intoxication and house policies. They’re short and come straight from the regulator.
- 5
5. Smart Serve’s free resources
“Things You Must Know” and the BAC chart on smartserve.ca cover hours, ID, signage and blood alcohol.
Habits that help
- Learn rules, not answers. The real test is randomly generated and worded differently.
- Know the numbers cold: 18 to serve, 19 to drink, 9 a.m. to 2 a.m., 45 minutes to clear, 9 a.m. to 11 p.m. for delivery, five years for your certificate.
- Do the test somewhere quiet with good light and your ID ready. Rule breaks fail the session even if your answers are right.
- Leave your study notes and AI tools off during the final test: they’re not allowed.
What to skip
Skip anything selling “real Smart Serve answers”. The questions are randomly generated, and outside help during the proctored test is against the rules. You’ll learn more from one explained practice test than from any answer list.
